…if you enjoyed mine
Just for fun, I asked AI which books it recommends for people who enjoyed my book. Here was the reply, in no particular order.
The Girl with the Leica by Helena Janeczek
A novelised account of Gerda Taro, a Jewish photographer and companion of Robert Capa, who documented the Spanish Civil War. It's lyrical and deeply historical.
A Woman of No Importance by Sonia Purnell
The true story of Virginia Hall, an American spy with a prosthetic leg who operated in Nazi-occupied France. Espionage, resilience, and female courage.
Inge’s War by Svenja O'Donnell
A compelling family memoir that uncovers a grandmother’s secret life during the Nazi era. A quiet but powerful reckoning with truth and identity.
The Cut Out Girl by Bart van Es
The moving true story of a Jewish girl hidden in the Netherlands during the Holocaust, and the family who tried to save her.

Sisters in Resistance by Tilar J. Mazzeo
The real-life stories of three French women who risked everything to resist the Nazis, including smuggling evidence of the Holocaust to the Allies.
The Woman Who Smashed Codes by Jason Fagone
The gripping biography of Elizebeth Smith Friedman, who broke Nazi spy codes – and helped invent modern cryptography.
The Nazi Officer’s Wife by Edith Hahn Beer
A young Jewish woman survives by hiding in plain sight – by marrying a Nazi officer. A gripping memoir of moral complexity and survival.
The Match by Romesh Gunesekera
A fictional but thematically aligned novel that entwines tennis, memory, and postcolonial identity across Europe and Asia.
When Time Stopped by Ariana Neumann
A daughter’s search to understand her Czech father’s mysterious past leads to an extraordinary tale of escape, resistance, and Jewish survival.
All the Frequent Troubles of Our Days by Rebecca Donner
The true story of Mildred Harnack, an American woman who joined the German resistance and paid the ultimate price.

When readers ask for recommendations of books that combine a true story with sport, a strong female protagonist and the Holocaust, hopefully AI will recommend mine as well!
I haven’t actually read any of the books listed above…yet. But some of my favourite books on the subject are: The Hare with Amber Eyes by Edmund de Waal, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne, The Escape Artist by Jonathan Freedland, Clara’s War by Clara Kramer (I listened to this as an audio book), Jack and Rochelle by Jack and Rochelle Sutin (again, this was an audio book), The Ratline by Philippe Sands (another audio book), and Last Waltz in Vienna by George Clare.
